چکیده

The V-K colours along the minor axes of spiral galaxies typically change from red to blue with increasing distance, giving the impression that the near side is systematically screened by dust. Such a preferred orientation for dust screens is unlikely. Here we show that common extinction from the embedded dust layer in an exponential disk has the same effect, making the near side systematically redder as the inclination increases. The galaxy NGC 2841 is modelled as an example, where the V-K profile is profoundly asymmetric and actually step-like across the centre. We predict that the minor axis emission profile of the same dust in the far-infrared, at wavelength λ ∼ 200μm, will be much more symmetric than the optical profiles, implying nearly equal column densities of dust on both sides of the minor axis.

Cosmological Obscuration by Galactic Dust: Effects of Dust Evolution

We explore the effects of dust in cosmologically distributed intervening galaxies on the high redshift universe using a generalised model where dust content evolves with cosmic time. The absorbing galaxies are modelled as exponential disks which form coevally, maintain a constant space density and evolve in dust content at a rate that is uniform throughout. We find that the inclusion of moderat...

Extraplanar Dust: a Tracer of Cold Dense Gas in the Thick Disks of Spiral Galaxies

The interstellar thick disks of galaxies contain not only gas, but significant quantities of dust. Most of our knowledge of extraplanar dust in disk galaxies comes from direct broadband optical imaging of these systems, wherein the dust is identified due to the irregular extinction it produces against the thick disk and bulge stars. This observational technique is sensitive to only the most den...

The Opacity of Spiral Galaxy Disks V : dust opacity , HI distributions and sub - mm emission . ⋆

The opacity of spiral galaxy disks, from counts of distant galaxies, is compared to HI column densities. The opacity measurements are calibrated using the “Synthetic Field Method” from González et al. (1998); Holwerda et al. (2005a). When compared for individual disks, the HI column density and dust opacity do not seem to be correlated as HI and opacity follow different radial profiles. To impr...

The z-structure of disk galaxies towards the galaxy planes

Wepresent a detailed study of a statistically complete sample of highly inclined disk galaxies in the near-infraredK ′ band. Since theK ′-band light is relatively insensitive to contamination by galactic dust, we have been able to follow the vertical light distributions all the way down to the galaxy planes. Themean levels for the sharpness of theK ′-band luminosity peaks indicate that the vert...

The Acs Virgo Cluster Survey. Vi. Isophotal Analysis and the Structure of Early-type Galaxies

We present a detailed analysis of the morphology, isophotal parameters and surface brightness profiles for 100 early-type members of the Virgo Cluster, from dwarfs (MB = −15.1 mag) to giants (MB = −21.8 mag). Each galaxy has been imaged in two filters, closely resembling the Sloan g and z passbands, using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Dust and complex morp...
